Think the holiday season is behind us? Not so fast! Thanks to a French tradition dating back to the 14th century, we have the perfect excuse to indulge a little longer with the Galette des Rois. Not feeling up to baking your own? No problem—these Lausanne spots have you covered. Now the real question is: who will find the fève and wear the crown as King or Queen for the day?
Bread Store
It’s all in the name. The Bread Store specializes in all things bread and pastry, and the line out the door every weekend shows just how serious they are. Their focus on slow fermentation, natural ingredients, and artisanal craftsmanship means that every product that comes out of Bread Store is bound to be delicious — including their Galette des Rois.
Acarré
Known for their innovative take on classic pastries, Accaré puts a creative spin on the traditional Galette des Rois. Their version features a caramelized croissant dough layered with frangipane cream and crushed almonds, making it a rich and indulgent choice to celebrate Epiphany in style.
Chez Séverine et Luca
This cute and cozy little tea room located near the gare is led by, you guessed it, Séverine and Luca. Everything is made on-site by hand by Luca himself, with a focus on ancient grains and sourdough. With a wide offering of sweet and savory delights, it’s hard to choose, but we recommend grabbing a Galette des Rois or their Couronnes des Reines. Choose from a traditional frangipane, a decadent almond and dark chocolate, or soft, pillowy buns filled with raisins or chocolate. Whichever you pick, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the season with a sweet touch.
Maison Buet
Named the official chocolatier of the City of Lausanne for 2019 and 2020, they know a thing or two about delicious treats. And lucky for us, Maison Buet isn’t just in the business of chocolate, they also have an incredible boulangerie selection where their Galette des Rois are well-known and quickly snatched.
Le Pain des Frouze
Their philosophy is simple but takes effort to execute: to put bread back at the center of the table and promote a healthier and more eco-responsible diet. While they don’t have a physical brick-and-mortar bakery here in Lausanne, they bake in Etagnières and provide many restaurants and shops with bread. You can find their bread stall at the market on Wednesday and Saturday (just in front of the old Carl Franz Weber), and they'll have their galettes available for the entire month of January. Also this year, they have a contest going on--if you find their special lapin coquin fève, you'll win some great prizes!
Moutarlier
Moutarlier, renowned for their artisanal craftsmanship, offers a Galette des Rois that exemplifies traditional French pastry excellence. Their version features buttery, flaky puff pastry encasing a rich frangipane filling, crafted with high-quality ingredients to ensure a delightful Epiphany celebration. With multiple locations across the region, including Lausanne, Lutry, and Montreux, Moutarlier makes it convenient to indulge in this festive treat.
