Wickelfisch Swims into Lausanne

Basel has given us many things—Fasnacht, world-class museums, Art Basel, and riverside swimming as a legitimate sport—but one of its most beloved exports is also one of its most practical: the Wickelfisch.

If you’ve ever walked along the Rhine on a summer day, chances are you’ve spotted a stream of neon-colored dry bags floating alongside swimmers. These unmistakable “fish” are waterproof companions designed to carry your clothes, keys, and even your phone, all while you drift downstream. And like many great Swiss ideas, it was born from a very specific, very practical need.

The story goes like this: two passionate river swimmers—Andreas and Daniel—wanted to swim home from work. Not metaphorically. Literally. But they couldn’t figure out how to keep their clothes dry as they floated down the Rhine. So they sketched out an idea for a waterproof, floatable bag, sewed up a few prototypes, and tested them themselves. The result? A local invention that became a cult sensation—equal parts functional, iconic, and just a little bit quirky.

Now, for the first time, Wickelfisch has arrived in Lausanne.

And honestly? It’s about time.

With Lac Léman as our backdrop and lake days deeply woven into the rhythm of summer, Lausanne feels like a natural next chapter for this floating favorite. Whether you’re diving in at Pully Plage, paddleboarding in Vidy, or simply setting up a post-work apéro by the water, Wickelfisch fits right in.

The bag itself is lightweight, foldable, and seals with a clever roll-top closure that keeps water firmly out. It’s available in various sizes and bold colors, so whether you’re stashing a book, a towel, or a full change of clothes, there’s a fish for you.

You can now find Wickelfisch bags in Lausanne at ETAM, as well as in stores in Geneva, Montreux, Morges—and, of course, online.

Practical, playful, and born from a deep love of Swiss waters—Wickelfisch might be new to Lausanne, but we have a feeling it’ll feel right at home.
