Every spring, the hills above Montreux turn white as the fields become frosted with thousands of wild narcissi or “May snow.” This natural spectacle, once the centerpiece of Montreux’s Belle Époque* festivities, continues to enchant and entice hikers and flower enthusiasts alike.

We saw from the ‘forecast’ on narcisses.com, that the fields at Les Avants were in full bloom this past weekend, so we opted for the Switzerland Mobility hike no. 133 aptly named ‘Chemin des Narcisses’. Starting with the picturesque train ride from Lausanne which takes about an hour, we spared the hassle of trying to find parking and also treated us to some pre-hike stunning vistas of Lac Léman and the surroundings.

The trail kicks off with a steep ascent, but the effort is quickly rewarded. Even early on, clusters of narcissi greet you, hinting at the floral treats ahead. The approximately 2-hour circular route weaves through varied landscapes—shady forests, open meadows, and panoramic viewpoints. One moment, you’re gazing at the shimmering expanse of the Lac Léman; the next, the rugged, iconic silhouette of the Dent de Jaman takes centre stage. Whilst the narcissus fields are undeniably captivating, it’s essential to note that these flowers are protected and fenced-off areas and signs remind visitors not to pick or trample the blooms, ensuring that future generations can enjoy them too.

About halfway through the hike, make sure to take a break at the Cubly viewpoint, where you'll find a lovely picnic area with incredible views. It’s the perfect spot to rest and enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by nature.
For those visiting during the weekends in May, there’s also a Marché Artisanal at Les Avants, celebrating the season's flowers with local crafts and goods—perfect for picking up a unique souvenir while supporting artisans from the region.
For a flower that lent its name to self-obsession, the narcissi bloom quietly, drawing admirers not by demanding attention, but by naturally deserving it. Go see for yourselves, and may your spring be filled with blooming good adventures!

TLG Tip: Les Pléiades is expected to reach full bloom in the coming week, making it an excellent alternative for those looking to catch the “May snow” at its peak.
*Back in the Belle Époque, Montreux was the playground of Europe’s elite—grand hotels, lakefront promenades, and springtime festivals made it the epitome of Alpine elegance. Narcissus festivals would see parades, concerts, and excursions up into the hills to celebrate the wild flowers in full bloom.
