La Villa Montreux

Some places have a way of gently rearranging your sense of time.

At La Villa Montreux, it happens somewhere between sinking into a lakeside table, feeling grass beneath your feet, and looking up at blue-and-white umbrellas dancing gently overhead. Time softens a little. Lunch stretches longer than planned. The lake glimmers. Another cocktail suddenly feels like a perfectly reasonable decision.

Not bad for an ordinary afternoon in Montreux.

La Villa

Set directly along the lakeside promenade in a Gustavian-style residence dating back to 1858, La Villa balances old-world charm with an atmosphere that feels refreshingly relaxed. Elegant without being stuffy, polished without trying too hard, it’s the kind of address that quietly encourages you to slow down and stay awhile.

The terrace, of course, is part of the magic. With its striped parasols, grassy lawn, and front-row seat to Lac Léman, there’s something undeniably transportive about the setting. More than once, we found ourselves forgetting, just briefly, that we were still in Switzerland.

The restaurant, led by chef Raffaele Sposito, leans Mediterranean in spirit: generous, sun-drenched, and rooted in pleasure. It’s the kind of place that lends itself naturally to lingering lunches, celebratory apéros, or dinners that drift gently toward sunset.

And speaking of lingering, don’t skip the cocktails. The Villa cocktail arrived bright, citrusy, and delightfully refreshing. Somewhere between a refined spritz and lemon granita in drink form, it was tangy, icy, and exactly what you want in hand on a warm day by the lake. We also tried Generation, an aperitif liquor created by Kiera and Spencer Chaplin, members of Charlie Chaplin’s family. A quietly fitting detail in a town where Chaplin’s legacy still lingers nearby.

What surprised us most, though, was discovering that La Villa isn’t just a restaurant.

Upstairs, an intimate boutique hotel with just eight rooms offers the kind of escape that makes you briefly consider cancelling your plans and extending your stay. During a short tour after lunch, one room in particular stopped us in our tracks: a sprawling private terrace overlooking the lake, complete with a bathtub positioned toward the very same spectacular view.

The verdict? Come for lunch, cocktails, or a little Riviera-flavoured escapism on the shores of Lac Léman. Stay the night if you’re in the mood for a staycation that feels much farther from home than the drive to Montreux would suggest.

TLG tip: If you’re strolling along the quai on a sunny weekend, make a spontaneous stop at their Guinguette, La Villa’s laid-back lakeside bar. Come for the cocktails, small bites, and relaxed lakeside atmosphere. Stay for the swing on the terrace, perched just high enough above the promenade to make you feel momentarily suspended between the Riviera and Lac Léman.
