It honestly felt like we were transported into a Jane Austen novel (without the angst). The property of Château de Vullierens is expansive and meticulously manicured, sitting atop the rolling hills and vineyards just above Morges, offering a panoramic view of Lake Geneva and the Alps. It’s a beautiful property in its own right, but the icing on the cake is its world-renowned gardens.
The history of the estate dates back over 700 years, with the original Château-Vieux, a fortified house, built in 1308. The current château, constructed between 1706 and 1712, is a stunning example of early 18th-century Swiss architecture. In the mid-20th century, the estate found a new chapter in its story when Doreen Taylor Meyer, an American from San Francisco, married Dr. Robert Bovet, a descendant of the château's owners. With her deep love of gardening, Doreen began cultivating irises on the estate, a passion that would ultimately lead to the creation of the stunning gardens we can visit today. In 1955, she opened the gardens to the public, inviting all to experience the beauty she had nurtured for years. The legacy she created continues to thrive, with over 400 varieties of irises and a growing collection of blooms each year.

Every year, the public has just a short window to enjoy the gardens; from late April to late July, the flowers are at their peak. During this time, visitors can witness a truly spectacular display of nature, with more than 110,000 flowers bursting into life. The gardens are a kaleidoscope of colors, from vibrant irises and lilies to fragrant peonies and roses. It’s as if the seasons themselves have come together to paint the landscape.

But these gardens are not just for flower enthusiasts—they also captivate admirers of art. Over 90 contemporary sculptures by Swiss and international artists are scattered throughout the estate, each blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings. Some of these impressive works stand as tall as six meters, competing with the grandeur of nature itself.

As you wander through the gardens, taking in the sights and sounds, you’ll eventually find yourself at the Café des Jardins. It’s hard not to feel at ease as you settle into one of the shaded tables under a canopy of trees. The café offers a variety of refreshments, from light snacks and salads to grilled meats and pâtisseries, along with wines and drinks to suit any taste. On Sundays, a popular brunch is served buffet-style, featuring a mix of sweet and savory dishes, including grilled meats—a perfect way to recharge before continuing your exploration. Reservations are recommended for the brunch, as it’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Once you’ve refueled, a visit to the boutique is a must. The shop offers wines from the estate’s vineyard, including the regional Chasselas, Garanoir, and Rosé. You’ll also find charming gifts, from floral tea sets to adorable quilted stuffed animals for children, and even a lovely selection of birdhouses. There’s something for everyone to take home—a piece of the estate’s beauty to enjoy long after you’ve left.

Whether you’re visiting as a couple, with family, friends, or solo, Château de Vullierens offers the perfect setting for a peaceful morning or afternoon. With nature's best at your fingertips, it’s a beautiful way to connect with the land and its history, all while basking in the serene beauty of one of the most delightful properties in Vaud. Every visit is an invitation to step back in time and immerse yourself in a world where nature and art coexist in perfect harmony, thanks to a vision sparked by an American woman named Doreen.
