A Slice of Naples in Lausanne: Il Taglio

You might not expect to find a little corner of Naples on Rue du Maupas, but that’s exactly what you’ll stumble upon at Il Taglio—a small, charming spot that brings big flavour (and even bigger heart) to Lausanne.

It’s mostly a takeaway place, but worth stepping inside. There are a few small tables draped with mismatched cloths, retro Italian illustrations on the walls, and strings of dried chilies and garlic hanging overhead. The space hums with quiet warmth—part deli, part kitchen, all heart.

Behind the counter, a pizzaiolo from Naples works steadily, pulling trays of pizza al taglio from the oven and slicing them into neat rectangles. The specials change often, but that’s part of the fun. When we stopped by, we tried roasted aubergine with ’nduja—smoky, spicy, and just the right amount of heat—and another topped with burrata, roasted tomatoes, and sardines.

But Il Taglio’s charm extends beyond the pizza. There are golden arancini (the kind you’ll want to eat while standing on the sidewalk, cheese stretching and strings of mozzarella refusing to let go), rich lasagnas, freshly made pastas, and focaccia sandwiches that make “quick lunch” sound far too ordinary.

Nothing here feels rushed. Everything tastes like it’s made by someone who cares deeply about getting it right—and maybe misses home just a little. It’s simple, soulful food that transports you, even if only for a few bites.

Il Taglio doesn’t need to be big or boastful. It’s the kind of place that earns its reputation one slice, one bite, one satisfied sigh at a time. Whether you’re popping in for takeaway or snagging a table inside, this is Naples—by way of Lausanne.
