Every October, pastry counters across Romandie blush pink for a cause that began right here in Lausanne. The carac rose—a twist on the region’s beloved green chocolate tart—isn’t just another seasonal novelty. It’s the symbol of an initiative that’s part confection, part conversation starter, and entirely heart-driven.
It all began with Mélanie Tanner, a marketing professional and mum who, at 38, received a breast cancer diagnosis that changed everything. In the months that followed, Mélanie found herself wanting to do more than just recover—she wanted to raise awareness for early detection in a way that felt joyful and approachable. Her idea was beautifully simple: take the iconic Swiss carac, tint it pink, and donate part of each sale to breast-cancer charities across Romandie.

What started in 2022 with three Lausanne bakeries—Maison Buet, Noz Chocolatier, and Nessi—has since grown into a full-fledged movement. Last year, more than 270 bakeries and 150 Migros stores joined in, helping raise over CHF 95,000 for seven local associations. And while the numbers are impressive, what makes Le Carac Rose special is how personal it remains. Every participating bakery is part of the story. Every pink tart sold sparks a conversation that might just save a life.

As Mélanie has said, even if just one person books a screening after seeing a pink carac in a window, it’s worth it.

Throughout October, you’ll spot caracs roses in pastry cases all over Lausanne and beyond—each one a small, edible reminder of the power of community. Every bite counts. And sometimes, doing good really is that sweet.
