For me, nothing kills the joy of a ski day faster than being stuck in traffic—whether it’s crawling through the morning rush or dragging home with tired legs and soggy gear. It’s no wonder so many people skip the slopes altogether and miss out on this classic Swiss winter experience. But here’s the good news: there’s a much easier way. Hop on a train, breeze past the congestion, and head straight to the mountains. With online passes and on-site rentals, everything you need is ready and waiting—stress-free and hassle-free.
Curious about where to go? Here are our top three ski destinations easily reachable by train from Lausanne—no traffic jams required.
1. Villars-Gryon-Diablerets ski area
Just a short 1.5-hour train ride from Lausanne, the Alps Vaudoises offer a winter wonderland for skiers of all levels. Whether you're carving down gentle beginner runs or tackling challenging slopes, there's something here for everyone. Want to make the most of your day? Grab a pass that covers all three ski areas and enjoy endless runs without skipping a beat.
Gear rentals are a breeze, too—you’ll find shops located near the train station or right at the base of the télécabine. Need lessons? The local ski schools have you covered; just give them a call to book in advance. When it’s time to take a break, you can either savor a packed picnic at one of the many picturesque spots on the mountain or treat yourself to a hearty meal in a cozy restaurant (just don’t forget to reserve ahead!).
TLG tip: Our favorite picnic stop is at Le Chamossaire leave your skis next to the chair lift and walk up for 2 min to get there and be ready to get a breathtaking view of Lac Leman. If you want something more cozy and very Swiss then definitely try Bretaye 1808.
2. Leysin
Leysin is the perfect blend of adventure and accessibility, just 1 hour and 20 minutes by train from Lausanne—no car required. At the summit, a revolving restaurant treats you to breathtaking panoramic views of Lac Léman, making your lunch as unforgettable as your ski runs. Rentals and tickets? Easy—everything’s available right at the base of the télécabine. And if skiing isn’t enough to satisfy your winter cravings, why not end the day with some thrills at the Tobogganing Park? It’s the cherry on top of an already fun-filled mountain escape.
TLG tip: Don't miss the panoramic view from Le Kuklos, grab a coffee break on their terrace. Try to take your lunch break before noon, and then go back to skiing when everyone has stopped for their lunch break. We suggest to stop at Chalet les Fers and try their potato wedges.
3. Verbier
Skiing in Verbier is a dream come true, and it’s just 1.5 hours from Lausanne by train to Le Châble, making it incredibly accessible for a day trip or weekend getaway. As part of the renowned 4 Vallées ski area, Verbier boasts over 400 km of slopes catering to all levels, from beginners to seasoned pros. The domain is also known for its vibrant après-ski scene and excellent dining options, with cozy mountain huts and gourmet restaurants offering everything from hearty Swiss specialties to fine dining. Whether you’re carving through pristine snow or enjoying a long lunch with a view, Verbier has something for everyone!
TLG TIP: We love the après scene at Le Rouge, and one of our favorite spots for a lunch or dinner is Marlenaz (though we heard they are repairing it after a devastating fire). For dinner, you can request Marlenaz to come grab you via snowmobile, and then sled back down to the village after. Sleds can be easily and cheaply rented in the village at any ski shop.
So, grab your gear, hop on a train, and let the Alps do the rest. Whether you're chasing powder or perfecting your après-ski game, these slopes near Lausanne promise adventure without the hassle. See you on the mountain—don’t forget your gloves! 🏔️🎿
