Street Style – Léonard

We spotted Léonard at the market a couple of weeks ago and loved his attention to details – the scarf and sunglasses make the look, don’t they?! After awkwardly asking him if we could take his picture (he thought we were asking because we thought he was dressed badly – obviously, our French still needs perfecting), we noticed two other handsome fellas standing off to the side–his dad and son! We had to grab a shot of the three generations together. It seems good style runs in the family. Léonard told us that his entire outfit came from local boutique Via Zingara on Rue Grand Chêne, but you can find similar pieces below: Shop the Story   Denim Shirt: This one is a classic. Chinos: The price is right for these. Scarf: Embrace the patterns. Shoes: Theseones.

Street Style – Julie

Photo by Gabriel We interrupted Julie while picking out her carrots at the market to snap this shot of her effortlessly chic look. She’s wearing an Isabel Marant jacket, holding a Kurt Geiger bag and her shoes are from Zara. A fabulous ensemble for market day! Shop The Story Jacket: This one Striped Top: We love this one Black Jeans: These will look good with anything/on anyone Bag: This one or that one Shoes: These are almost identical (and on sale!) or these if you’re looking for a bit more fringe/frill!

LG Apéro Does Cipriano – A Recap

The best part of creating The Lausanne Guide is undoubtedly the offline connections that we get to make with readers. We love this space that we’re curating, so perhaps it shouldn’t surprise us that we also love the great people that connect with it. A huge ‘thank you’ to the group that joined us for the LG Apéro hosted by Cipriano last Thursday night for wine, cocktails, nibbles and great conversation. These events always remind us why we wanted to put together a guide in the first place! Thank you especially for your encouragement and ideas. We are glad to have made so many new friends! A couple of shout outs to the people that made the evening possible: First off, merci merci merci to Cipriano for hosting us in their beautiful, industrial chic restaurant and for offering such great drink specials! We can’t wait to go back. Also,

4 Things We Love This Fall

Sometimes it’s the little things–and all of these little things have made our home look and feel and smell more like a home. And the best part? All of these products can be found or purchased right here in Lausanne! One: This all-surface spray from Merchant & Co that is completely safe to use around food and smells glorious. Two: This hamper from Globus that’s almost too pretty to throw dirty clothes into (and the price!). Three: This candle from Paddywax in Tobacco & Vanilla (available at Baies d’Erelle) makes you want to cozy up indoors and never leave. Four: This new elusive fragrance from Aēsop that was created by leading parfumist Céline Barel. It’s fresh and earthy and continues to adapt to your body as you wear it throughout the day. Go to Globus and give it a try.

The Color Run Lausanne

What started out as the UN-happiest hour and a half delay at the start line eventually turned into an explosively and ridiculously comical 5K run. We were amongst the 10,000+ color runners who showed up on Saturday morning to make Lausanne history at the first ever Color Run in the Olympic capitol; from toddlers in push chairs to people on crutches it seemed that everyone there had their eyes fixed on one goal: to have fun (by throwing a bunch of color powder packets at each other!). Here are some of our favorite photos from the day…thanks Gabriel for capturing the joy and celebration that was The Color Run. Were you at The Color Run? What was your experience like?

Foound

The minute you turn onto the street where Foound’s industrial building resides, the creative energy is blatantly obvious. A black and white mural beckons you to its entrance, swirls and lines that lead you right to the heart of an original and unique collaborative space for entrepreneurs and local artists. Inside you’ll find anything and everything; a bicycle shop, a tattoo parlor, clothing and kitchen items, a buvette, hairdressers, yoga classes, art workshops, an osteopath,  and wine tastings. It seems that a co-working space with such diverse interests would clash, but Foound has found its balance–it’s all about the common thread of pursuing innovation and inspiration…and it works. And in a similar vein to its philosophy of ingenuity, Foound hosts events regularly to promote local artists and businesses. Fun themes like the ‘After Work Olé Olé’ featuring flamenco dancing, tapas, and sangria make it a space that features the

Travel By Cocktails @ The Beau-Rivage Palace

It was one of those early summer nights where the air had a slight hot stickiness to it, but every once in awhile the breeze would bring refreshing relief. Walking onto the the Bar’s terrace, we were immediately greeted by a smooth riff by the live saxophonist; the melody then broke into an energetic rendition of Bob Marley’s One Love and we took a look around: is this really Lausanne? Welcome to Travel by Cocktails at the Beau-Rivage Palace. Here are some more photos of our girls’ night: We decided to take our weekly girls’ night out of the center city and travel lakeside for this special occasion, and we couldn’t have been happier with that decision. The music, the food, the drinks, the energy! What’s not to love? We had heard about the infamous parties thrown at the Beau-Rivage, but never made a strong effort to go. Why? Don’t

The Art of Hosting

There’s a reason we asked Jackie to join our team specifically as our Event Coordinator a few months ago. We had only attended a handful of her parties, but we were so blown away by her ability to plan such entertaining and memorable functions and host with such ease. Normally we find ourselves a bit frazzled if the meal isn’t finished and cocktails aren’t being poured as guests walk through the door, but Jackie is calm and collected. She pours you a glass of wine, chats with you as she salts the pork and heats up oil on the frying pan. She has time to joke, time to walk over to the stereo and turn up the volume, time to compliment your outfit, and time to whisper coquettishly into her husband’s ear. She has definitely mastered the art of hosting, so we decided to ask her to share a

A Day at Hotel Trois Couronnes

Last month we had the great pleasure of spending a luxurious Sunday at Vevey’s Trois Couronnes Hotel for spa treatments and a gorgeous brunch with our husbands. To call it sumptuous would be an understatement! While the boys sipped coffee and read the paper in the bar, we changed into cozy white robes and relaxed in the hotel’s famous spa… It was one of those broody spring days, where the Lake and the sky are contrasting shades of grey and the mountains, often veiled in clouds, seem to magically disappear and reappear. We felt pretty lucky to enjoy the sight from the spa’s relaxation room.  After two indulgent treatments – one facial and one massage – we reluctantly abandoned our perch and headed over to the gorgeous dining area to try their famous Sunday brunch. Our reluctance had clearly been misplaced…this was one of the days that was only

Down to an Art – an Interview with Vernon Dubner

The first words that come to mind when we think about our friend Vernon Dubner, the gallerist of Dubner Moderne, are dapper, passionate and kind. Dapper because he positively effuses sophistication, (what more could you expect from a man with a tailor in Milan); passionate and kind because his enthusiasm for art is matched only by his enthusiasm for a good conversation, a talent he masters by making you feel like the most important person in the room. Raised in New York City in a family of art collectors and enthusiasts, it’s perhaps no surprise that he thrives in his field, but we’ll admit that when we first learned that this young, approachable, craft-beer-drinking guy was the art dealer and connoisseur behind the Dubner Moderne gallery, we were surprised. While he is one of the most elegant people we’ve met in Lausanne, art dealing seemed like the business of

Craft Beer Workshop | La Nébuleuse + TA CAVE + La Mer en Boîte

We honestly could not have imagined a more perfect afternoon–the beer, the meat, the cheese, the fish, the people! On Saturday afternoon we hosted a collaborative Craft Beer Workshop featuring brews from La Nébuleuse at one of our favorite neighborhood bars, TA CAVE. The house was packed with beer enthusiasts and we spent the afternoon sampling various beer and learning about the brewing process as well as how to pair beer with a variety of foods. We even had a surprise addition to our menu from the fine people of La Mer en Boîte, a local bar à poisson who are taking the canned fish market by storm and adding the gourmet touch (seriously, de.li.cious). Here are some pictures from the afternoon if you’d like to see… One of our favorite fish–soaked in sesame oil. We love the beautiful packaging from La Mer en Boîte It was a perfect mix

TEDxLausanneWomen – May 28, 2015

Since 2006 when their short-format, quasi-theatrical and highly-engaging talks became available for streaming online, TED has been blowing our minds by bringing attention to the work of experts who although they have “ideas worth sharing” might otherwise labor in silence in the silos of the hyper-specialized modern workplace. Also widely celebrated is TED’s local franchise model TEDx, which allows communities across the world to plan and host their own events by recruiting leaders, geeks, artists, and academics whose contribution to their area could be inspiring to a local audience. Last year we had the great pleasure of attending TEDx Lausanne at UNIL. Can we just say that there are so many talented and courageous people doing great work here in our city?! So when a friend of ours on the planning committee of the TEDxLausanne event asked that we share information with you about the upcoming TEDxLausanneWomen on May

The Brooklyn Hipster Foodie Fest | Street Kitchen + Guerilla Gourmande

Last week we had the great pleasure of joining some fine people for a dinner event – The Brooklyn Hipster Foodie Fest – hosted by fellow Lausanne blogger Lukas Menal of Guerrilla Gourmande and Emma & Toni of Street Kitchen fame. We feasted on inspired small plates like shortrib Gyoza and South African lamb curry and thoroughly enjoyed the company… Attendees were readers of the Guerilla Gourmande site, so naturally there was a shared spirit of foodie passion animating conversation. Photos by Serge Mercier Lausanne needs more events like this! Kudos to our hosts for taking the initiative to plan such a great evening. If you’re interested in knowing more about upcoming events or for foodie news and restaurant reviews from a local, follow along at Guerilla Gourmande. Thank you Lukas and Emma & Toni for letting us participate in your first foodie fest! We had a blast :).

Where to shop in Lausanne: cullycully.ch

A couple weeks ago while perusing the web, we came across a remarkable little company based just down the Lake Road in Cully. A couple of excited text messages to one another later, we had both placed our first orders of products from cullycully and we are delighted to report that we LOVE them. The brand features products that take a fresh, quirky, non-cliché approach to Swiss-made and Swiss-inspired. We were immediately drawn to their cotton shopping bags with local colloquial expressions. For our non-Swiss readers: Ca va le chalet ? – Are you crazy ? (also available) Il n’y a pas le feu au lac – The Lake is not on fire, or calm/slow down (also available) Das isch tip top – That’s the best (Swiss German) …and to the greeting cards with graphic renditions of Swiss sites and animals that you color in yourself (talk about an

LG Happy Hour Recap

Photo by Gabriel Garcia Photography A huge thank you to everyone who came out to our Lausanne Guide Happy Hour last Thursday night. We had an amazing time meeting some of the loveliest people, sipping on wine and cocktails and enjoying the delicious small plates from Eat Me. We hope you had fun too! It’s a funny thing, this digital world that we live in, and we were so happy to finally have the chance to put faces with the names of friends we’ve made online.  Photo by Gabriel Garcia Photography Thank you also to Eat Me for hosting this fabulous gathering in their gorgeous bar space. A Student Guide to Lausanne

Photos by Gabriel Garcia Welcome back students! In honor of the start of the new semester, we asked our friend Kristen Gehrman, a master’s student at UNIL, to put together a list of her favorite bars and restaurants that won’t break the bank. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: We got it. Lausanne is full of swanky bars, cozy cafés, and charming restos, and oh how we would love to patron them all! But what about for students? Those 20 chf cocktails are pretty much out of the question. It seems that a good, affordable night on the town is just a matter of knowing where to go. Here are a few places with just enough space, just enough noise, and just the right crowd to appeal to our young, poor, and restless selves. Whether you are currently in school or wishing that you still were, check out these favorite student hotspots: La Brasserie

LG Beauty Tips: Favorite Lipsticks

To us, lipstick was always one of those things you put on for special occasions…and when you did, you were spending the evening completely sure that everyone was staring at your lips for ALL THE WRONG REASONS: Is it too dark? Too bright? Do I look like a clown? Is it on my teeth?   It wasn’t until this year, after an Instagram ‘Daily Beauty Dare’ as well as random conversations with other girlfriends who shared the same fear of lipstick, that we decided to be bold and rock lipsticks on the daily. We realized that all of our fears were completely self-constructed, and also found that finding the right lipstick can do wonders for your face (and your mood!). So here are our current favorites: One: MAC Rebel This is the lipstick that blogger after blogger claim looks good on everyone and we have to admit, they are totally right. From dark

Lausanne Street Style: Claire and little Lisa

We couldn’t help ourselves with these two! We spotted Claire’s vintage and designer ensemble from across the market and were impressed with the ease of her look, but her ability to look so chic at the same time. And how could we resist when little Lisa wanted to pose with her mama as well? On Claire: Coat: Isabel Marant Boots: Vintage Scarf: The Kooples Purse: Vintage Photography by Gabriel Garcia Marengo
