On Friday, one of the biggest strikes in Switzerland will take place, in efforts to highlight the massive inequalities that still exist between men and women. The Grève des Femmes, or Women’s Strike, is calling on anyone and everyone who believes there is still a long way to go in terms of equality to come and participate–there are events happening all day on June 14, but the manifestation begins at 18h at Saint Francois, with a quick stop at the gare to join forces with participants from THE ENTIRE CANTON OF VAUD. After the march, at 20h at L’Arsenic Bar, there will be dancing, food trucks, and celebration as we hope for a just and empowered future for all. This is going to be huge. So if you want to be a part of history, grab face paint, a sign, and join us as we stand in solidarity for

March 11-17, 2019

Doesn’t it feel like an eternity ago when we were parading around town, faces kissed by the early spring sun? We knew it wasn’t going to last, but goodness, going on week 2 of rain and grey has us dreaming up more exotic vacation destinations for the future holidays. Alas, we know the sun will come out tomorrow (metaphorically speaking, perhaps), so let’s grab our umbrellas and find some fun events that will keep our spirits up this week! Good thing Lausanne has quite a few offerings too: Tuesday Quizz Night at Giraf Bar. Wednesday Have fondue in the charming Montriond space. February 25 – March 3, 2019

The highways were busier than normal this past weekend, as everyone is headed up to the mountains for the week long school holiday. Are you one of them? We are staying put because 1) we aren’t organized enough to plan ahead and 2) we’re tired and everyone knows that the word “holiday” with kids is a misnomer 😉 If you’re like us and staying local this week, don’t fret–Lausanne has some pretty cool events to make everyone else have FOMO…kind of. Ok fine, skiing would be pretty amazing this week too. Have a great week, wherever you are! Tuesday The Lausanne Lions will go up against HC Ambri-Piotta at 19h45. Wednesday It’s a Soirée Slam at Bleu Lézard–so bring your creative and competitive energy. Thursday The last of the Happy BAO’hours happens this Thursday starting at 17h30. February 18 – 24, 2019

We really don’t want to jinx it, but this entire weekend we couldn’t help but wonder if winter has bid us an early adieu. We know this weather is most likely a little spring tease, and we’ll most likely be under a blanket of snow in a few weeks…but wow, what a delightful tease it is. The sunshine continues for the foreseeable future, so let’s profit while we can! Enjoy the sunny week, and look out for the ‘supermoon’ on Tuesday–it seems that our children are already feeling the effects #circus. FYI: The Musée de la Main is collaborating with the mudac as they interpret the same theme of scent in very different ways. Check out their ‘parallel’ exhibitions, Quel Flair! Odeurs et Sentiments (MdlM–and on until 23 Feb, so hurry!) and Nez à nez: Contemporary Perfumers (mudac–on until 16 June). Tuesday Vernissage: Check out the new exhibit at Musée

Photograph by Gabriel Garcia Marengo What are you up to this week? The sentiment this week seems divided between those who are adamant about celebrating Valentine’s Day and those who are vehemently against it. And us? We find ourselves apathetically in the middle (meh). One thing we CAN get behind is having a day to unapologetically eat chocolate and buy flowers…but why can’t that be everyday? 😉 Whether you’re a V-day fan or not, there are plenty of fun events to keep us all dancing, drinking, drawing, and witnessing beauty in different forms this week. Have a good one, friends! Monday Get your abdominal muscles ready, because Bleu Lezard is hosting an “Expat Comedy Night” and there are sure to be some laughs. Tuesday 80s music at Lapin Vert every Tuesday. Jazz night at Etoile Blanche. If you’re a fan of James Blunt and/or Olympic/World champion figure skaters, then

February 4 – 10, 2019

There’s something quite romantic about Lausanne underneath a blanket of snow. The white dusting on the tiled rooftops, the cobble-stoned pathways bordered with powder; it’s as if seeing the city with new eyes. While the winter months may seem to drag on, we’ve begun to learn how to pause and appreciate this place, even on those grey days. And it’s much easier to appreciate Lausanne when it showcases such a variety of events each week! Here’s what’s going down this week in and around Lausanne this week: Tuesday It’s actually for the NEXT Tuesday, but we’d like to bring attention to an event and organization that we find inspiring and necessary for this day and age: Girls in Tech. They are a global non-profit focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of girls and women who are passionate about technology. Can we get an amen?! And next Tuesday they’re hosting

It’s that time of the year again–The World Snow Festival begins this week in Grindelwald. We’ve never made the trek, but we hear it’s absolutely phenomenal. Have you been? If you prefer to stay local this week (or have to, because, ya know, jobs), don’t fret! There are so many activities and events this week that are sure to keep us all busy, happy, well-fed, and maybe a bit buzzed 😉 Have a great week, friends! Monday The World Snow Festival begins in Grindelwald. Tuesday It’s apparently sold out, but we’ve gotta give a shout out to our friends at FoodHack who are hosting THE Emma from Street Kitchen and the dynamic duo Steeve and Davide from Ça Passe Crème on Tuesday night at the FoodPreneurs Meetup (major FOMO happening over here). They host these meetups regularly and feature dynamic entrepreneurs from the local food industry–so make sure to

A Huge Thanks | See You in the New Year!

Wow. What a year it has been! We always start the new year with anticipation, but we would never have expected this past year in Lausanne to be as exciting as it was. There were new bars, new brunch spots, old restaurants turned new, and new endeavors from old friends. Food festivals and music festivals, and by far the best Christmas market to date. We partied with you, tacos and margaritas in-hand for Cinco de Mayo, and we got to share our ideas about authenticity at a little gathering called Creative Mornings. There are so many other wonderful memories from this year–the list can go on and on– but it’s YOU, our readers, who keep us excited about coming back online year after year. It’s not just a digital space for us–it’s a community. We love the idea that we are still discovering Lausanne together, so from our TLG family

The Lausanne Guide Christmas Giveaways 2018

Joyeux Noël! Frohe Weihnachten! Buon Natale! Merry Christmas, friends! Santa has a lot on his plate in December, but at The Lausanne Guide, we’ve also been working on some holiday surprises and storing them up our sleeve. We are so grateful for you, our loyal readers, and Christmas is our chance to show you how much we love you by sharing some of our favorite products and services through our Christmas giveaways. We’ve been at it since 2012, so The Lausanne Guide Christmas giveaways have become something of a holiday tradition around here. They’re not exactly on par with carols, red bows, or eggnog. But sort of. 😉 This year we’re paying homage to our beloved adopted country by giving away Swiss or Swiss-based products and services that are especially close to our hearts. As you’ve probably gathered from our use of English and our preference for ‘z’ over

Let’s Fiesta: TLG x Eat Cinco de Mayo Party

CALLING ALL FLAVOR ADDICTS! It’s time to spice up apéro–and we’ve just the occasion. Scroll down for details! We’ve now been living in Switzerland for nearly a decade (what?!) and while we have come to love so many traditions of our adopted alpine country, there are always a few traditions that we miss about being back in the States. Cinco de Mayo is definitely one of them. With roots in California and Texas, Mexican food and culture was such an important part of our childhood and has now become a necessity in our adulthood. And while Cinco de Mayo has perhaps become a westerner’s excuse to eat delicious tacos and drink margaritas, we say—do we even need an excuse? It’s tacos and margs! We have had so.much.fun celebrating other traditions with you in the past (our Thanksgiving dinner will always go down as a favorite, and our Christmas Cocktails was

Tallis

There’s often a great divide when it comes to the subject of fur. There are those who love it for it’s luxurious feel and added warmth, while others are opposed to it because of the obvious ethical reasons. While we absolutely love the look and feel of real fur, we have always been part of the latter group–until we heard about Tallis. Tallis is a Swiss based luxury fur brand with a contemporary look and feel. While many other fur shops and brands seem stuffy and outdated, Tallis maintains the fine balance between current and classic. But the most important aspect of Tallis for us, is that ethical sourcing is at the core of all they do. So what is ethically sourced fur? Is that even a thing? Tallis works alongside the food industry to use animal furs that would otherwise be destroyed. You know that tasty rabbit you

These Five Things

This Freitag backpack. Because we spend every day together, come rain or shine. This colorful iPhone case. Because #summertime. This summery dress for the little, because it is under 10 euros and receives alllll the compliments. These handmade Greek leather sandals from Shopping Therapy, because they’re comfortable & feminine (and go with just about everything). This podcast…because it combines ingenuity with idealism and makes us believe our dreams could actually come true.

A Weekend in Lausanne [summer edition]

Not sure if you saw, but The Telegraph published an article about Lausanne being the most underrated city break and it got our wheels turning; if we had just one weekend in Lausanne, what would we do/see/eat/enjoy? This is actually a question we get quite a lot, so we decided to take a stab at it. Here we go! Saturday morning: Pancakes, Detox Juice, and a Flat White at Blackbird Downtown Diner Tanya’s pick: Head over to Blackbird Downtown Diner for pancakes or a breakfast burrito and a flat white made with their in-house roasted coffee. The service is friendly, there’s room for kids and strollers, and the no reservation policy is great for procrastinators. Sarah’s pick: Grab a cup of Jasmine tea to go at Tekoe then head up to Place de la Riponne for a croissant or brioche au sucre from one of the vendors, weaving through the lively outdoor market as

A Visit to Giovanni – Beau-Rivage Palace Cinq Mondes Spa

Sometimes you just need a change. On Sunday, we headed over to the salon at the Beau-Rivage Palace Cinq Mondes Spa for a little R&R and some time with their new hair stylist Giovanni. I was on the fence about what to do with my tired old locks and asked for some advice – should I just cut them off? Considering the options with the pixie-headed celebrities on my Pinterest board. Because a hair cut can turn me into Lily Collins, right? And then the die was cast…Chop…Chop… Chop… There you have it: Short and fresh, just in time for the warmer days ahead. A huge thank you to Giovanni for the relaxing afternoon and fun new look! Lausanne Expert Tip: If your schedule doesn’t allow for mid-day hair appointments during the week, it can be difficult to get appointments with the best stylists in town as Saturday slots are
